Vatican City, January 14, 2011 – John Paul II will be beatified at the Vatican on May 1, 2011. This was announced by the Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, after his successor Benedict XVI, in fact, today signed the decree recognizing a miracle attributed to Karol Wojtyla.
Polish pontiff’s beatification is therefore just six years after his death, April 2 2005. Pope Ratzinger has departed from the canonical norms which provide for five years after the death expect to open the canonical process of beatification. On May 13, 2005, just weeks after his election, however, Pope Ratzinger, at the Cathedral of St. John, before the Roman clergy in Latin announced its decision to allow the immediate opening of the canonical cause for John Paul II. It was precisely the Polish pope for the first time to derogate from this rule, allowing for the immediate start of the canonical process for Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who died in 1997 and was beatified in 2003.
“The beatification of Pope Wojtyla barely six years after his death, but no discount was made in the procedures and the findings during the canonical process, which indeed was very sloppy,” said Father Lombardi always.
